Fall Fine Asian Art & Antiques Auction - Auction Review

[ASHBURN, VA, SEPTEMBER 13, 2019]    September 6 and 7 saw the main exhibition space of Oakridge Auction Gallery of Ashburn, VA transformed into the site of intense bidding between live, telephone, and online bidders. Many of those present in the auction salon had flown in particularly to take advantage of the annual Fall Fine Asian Art and Antiques auction, which coincided neatly with New York’s Asia week in art auctions.

Marking the 5th anniversary of Oakridge auctions, the 10th biannual Fine Asian Art & Antiques brought a total of 646 lots to the auction block, from archaic jades to Imperial porcelains, Chinese paintings and calligraphy, and a special selection of exquisitely wrought snuff bottles and Chinese antique jewelry. The competition online and in house was fierce, with several new bidders from the Snuff Bottle Society interested particularly in the first of the inaugural special sessions. Among the more staggering sales of that session was a snuff bottle ornamented with a Qianlong Imperial Poem, which was picked up by a European collector at the final price of US $22,140 (including premium).

Although many bidders expressed concerns at the impact of tariffs on Chinese-American commercial trade levied by the Trump administration, new measures of which were introduced at the outset of the month, the final auction results testify to the continued interest in the Chinese art market. At Oakridge, the thought of tariffs had little real impact on the crack of the auctioneer’s hammer and the skyward-thrust paddles of the live and phone bidders.

Among the highlights of the auction were Lot 176, a Rare Imperial Blue and White Moon Flask Vase with Yongzheng Mark and Period, which came from a private collection in Northern California, and a Blue and White Porcelain Plaque with Three Birds by Wang Bu from a Canadian collection, both of which realized a price of US $319,800 (including premium). The Multi-Tiered Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Box from the Qianlong Period also fared well on the block, realizing US $159,900 (including premium). All in all, the auction was a resounding success, with the final hours merely seeding anticipation for the next Fine Asian Art and Antiques high-end auction, to be held in March 2020.

Oakridge Auction Gallery cordially thanks all of its bidders and consignors for continuing to choose Oakridge for the sale and acquisition of fine Asian antiques. We look forward to resuming our auction cycle with a dynamic blend of European, American, and international art and antiques in our October 2019 Around the World in 80(+) Lots auction.
