Announcing our October 2019 Around the World in 80 (+) Lots Auction
[ASHBURN, VA, August 22, 2019] Oakridge Auction Gallery is pleased to announce our October 2019 Around the World in 80 (+) Lots Auction, which will be held on October 19, 2019, beginning at 10 am EST. This auction, coordinated by the Department of European & American Art & Antiques at Oakridge, will feature over 500 lots from Africa, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas spanning several centuries of artistic and artisan production.
The auction will begin with several lots of African origin, including paintings by Peter Kodjo Attisso, a local practicing artist who recently emigrated from Togo. The lots will then wend their way through China, Korea, and Taiwan before continuing to Indonesia, India, and the Near and Middle East. From Europe, the auction features a selection of Russian and Polish religious artefacts, including several Orthodox icons; the lots then progress to Bohemian glassware, French porcelain, and a fine collection of 17th-19th century English paintings. Silver pieces from Sheffield and Boston bridge the Atlantic and invite our bidders to review a range of early and contemporary art from North America. This range includes a small yet significant collection of Native American artworks, including prints by the contemporary Inuit artists Pudlo Pudlat and Pitaloosie Saila. Our final stop takes us to Latin America, for works on paper by Oswaldo Guayasamin of Ecuador and silver from Argentina, ending with an appended section of fine jewelry.
Among the feature lots in this sale will be a miniature cast of the Taiwanese artist Ju Ming’s Tai Chi series of bronze sculptures, from the collection of Dr. Shien Biau Woo, the former Lt. Governor of Delaware and Professor Emeritus of the University of Delaware.
Also featured will be a painting of Princess Diana Spencer from a series of celebrity portraits by the contemporary Chinese artist Huang Yan, consigned from a private collection of his work in Northern Virginia. He is best known for his photographic explorations of the intersections between traditional and contemporary art. This remarkable painting depicts the People’s Princess with her face overlaid by a traditional Chinese landscape, paying tribute to both ancient forms of artistic practice in Asia and the celebrity enjoyed by figures like Princess Diana in the contemporary Western Hemisphere.
We welcome bidders to participate in this auction live in our gallery, as well as phone, absentee, and online bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com or Invaluable.com.
