Julian Martinez (aka Pocano or Pho-ca-no; San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1879-1943), stylized painting of a serpent and a skunk, tempera on canvas, signature bottom right; Martinez and his wife, the ceramicist Maria Martinez, were among the mostprominent Native artists of the early 20th century. Martinez's works are displayed in museums including the American Museum of Natural History, New York; Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; Museum of Northern Arizona, Katherine Harvey Collection,Flagstaff; The Amon Carter Museum of Art, Fort Worth, Texas; and the Smithsonian Institution.
